How to create your own Tarot spreads

You may be wondering how to create your own Tarot spreads. Sometime the standard spreads just don’t get at what you most want to know.

I’ll show you how to create your own Tarot spreads

—even if you just bought your first deck.

Step 1 – What do you want to know?

Your question may be broad such as what do I need to know right now?

Or it might be very specific such as: will I get a call back from the interview I just went on?

If you get stuck coming up with a question, pick a topic (such as work) and then create a question using the who, what, where, when, and how framework.

  • who can help me achieve my goals at work?
  • what talents am I not using to the fullest in my work?
  • where can I apply myself for the greatest results at work?
  • how can I find opportunities for a new position outside my current job?

Step 2 – Create a mind map for your Tarot spread

Next create a mind map of what your question encompasses.

Don’t worry, you will learn to do this in your head the more you practice it.

But if you are a beginner, I recommend getting out pen and paper and writing it out.

This step will SAVE you from unclear readings.

Step 3 – Craft a spread from your mind map

Use the mind map you created or part of the mind map to create the placements for your spread.

Too add more umph to your layout (optional)

Think about the shape of the spread. Is it linear moving from point A to point B?

Is it more circular where the placements relate to each other and don’t necessarily have fixed path?

Can you make it the shape of your question? For example a spread about your house in a house shape. Or a spread about different family members in the shape of a family tree.

Step 4 – lay out your cards and interpret

Your spread is now ready for use!

Before you lay any cards take a moment and focus on your question and the spread placements.

Ask yourself what you expect to see once you do lay cards.

Ask yourself what you are afraid to see and what you hope to see. Don’t worry, asking these questions up front won’t “jinx” the reading.

Now shuffle and lay the cards.

If you are curious, here’s what I pulled for the spread I just walked you through.

I love that the Empress came up as who I am growing into. Whew! 😅

It appears that I am of 2 minds or split between 2 things and this could be a problem. What else is new?

However I can lean into planting seeds for the future and being patient and waiting for the harvest.

The greatest potential accomplishment for me in 2025 is breaking through some of the blocks that have held me back for years.
