Learn Tarot – Refrains
Tarot is a visual medium.
In the same way that poetry has verbal refrains, Tarot has visual refrains.
What’s a refrain?
A refrain is a repeated line in poetry or song. Such as:
I am the Egg Man,
I am the Egg Man,
I am the Walrus.
Look at the image above.
The refrain in the image is light.
- The Death card contains the rising sun.
- The Hanged Man has light behind his head.
- The Hermit holds a lantern.
We now have a refrain before us
For the interpretation we just need to look and see how the light is showing up.
In the Death Card and the Hanged Man, the light seems to be just out of sight.
In the Death Card, the sun is barely rising.
With the Hanged Man, it’s behind his head so he can’t see it.
In the Hermit card, the light is before him, guiding his way.
I might interpret this to mean
you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step
Take what little you have to go on and start moving. The rest will be revealed as you go.
Hope that helps you on your Tarot quest.
